Cape Town has 29 municipal refuse drop-off sites and entry is free for households. Summer weekday hours (1 September to 30 April) run from 08:00 to between 18:00 and 20:30 depending on the site; Sundays are short, at 09:00–13:00 or 09:00–14:00. The limit is three loads per vehicle per day, and your vehicle or trailer must not exceed 1,5 tons.

What Cape Town Drop-Off Sites Accept
Every load must be sorted before you arrive. Unsorted or contaminated loads are refused at the gate and diverted to the nearest landfill.
- Clean garden waste — grass and cuttings. Branches to a maximum of 1,2 m long and 300 mm in diameter. No stumps with roots and no grass sods. Bagged garden refuse must be emptied out as directed.
- Clean builder’s rubble — broken bricks, sand, stone, cement and plaster. It must not contain paper, plastic, wood, glass, metal, tiles, ceramics, ceiling board or hazardous waste.
- Garage waste — separated and contained, maximum three loads per day.
- Recycling — paper, cardboard, cans, metal, plastic, milk and juice cartons, glass bottles and polystyrene. No load limit.
- E-waste and motor oil — at the designated recycling area. E-waste excludes batteries.
What Drop-Off Sites Will Not Take
Three categories are refused outright at every drop-off site: organic kitchen waste, hazardous waste and rubber waste (tyres).
Household hazardous waste is handled separately. Only the Bellville Refuse Transfer Station and the Athlone Refuse Transfer Station accept it, limited to 50 kg per resident per day.
Some sites carry extra restrictions. Bulky waste is not accepted at Welgelegen, De Grendel, Atlantis or Kensington. Garden service companies cannot use De Grendel, Atlantis, Kensington or Welgelegen. Sea Point handles recycling only. Prince George Drive accepts one load per client until its mini-MRF is operational.
Load Limits at Cape Town Drop-Off Sites
The limit is three loads per vehicle per day, including garden service companies, and it applies to available capacity on the day. Your vehicle or trailer must not carry more than 1,5 tons. Drop-off sites are for residents with cars, trailers and light delivery vehicles — larger volumes must go to a Council disposal facility at the approved tariffs.

A drop-off site is free, which makes it the right answer for one or two bakkie loads of clean, sorted waste.
